Romantic relationships are often associated with distractions in learning. However, the influence of romantic relationships on motivation is not that simple. In the psychological development of adolescents and young adults, romantic relationships are part of emotional maturation. Therefore, their impact can be either positive or negative, depending on the quality of the relationship and how couples manage it.

LOVE AND LEARNING MOTIVATION: IS THERE A CONNECTION?

There are several psychological factors that explain how romantic relationships can enhance learning motivation:

1. Providing encouragement before exams

Positive words can improve mood. For example, a partner saying, “You can do it,” or reminding someone to study calmly can boost self-confidence.

2. Reminding study schedules and assignment deadlines

Reminders from a partner can function as time control, helping individuals avoid procrastination because they feel someone cares about their achievements.

3. Accompanying each other while studying in a conducive environment

Studying together in places like libraries can create an academic atmosphere that encourages positive habits.

Psychological mechanisms that strengthen motivation:

  • Increased self-efficacy

Feeling valued and trusted increases confidence in one’s ability to learn.

  • Improved mood and positive energy

A positive emotional state helps the brain absorb information more effectively.

  • Creating shared long-term goals

Romantic relationships can motivate individuals to strive for a better future for the sake of the relationship.

FACTORS THAT REDUCE LEARNING MOTIVATION

However, romantic relationships can become obstacles if not managed properly:

1. Excessive communication time

Too much chatting or calling can disrupt study focus.

2. Emotional conflicts

Misunderstandings or jealousy can divert mental energy away from learning.

3. Emotional dependency

Feeling uneasy when messages are not immediately replied to can interfere with concentration.

Real-life example:

A student who constantly checks phone notifications while studying will struggle to maintain concentration due to continuous distractions.

STRATEGIES TO REDUCE NEGATIVE IMPACT AND BUILD A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP

To ensure romantic relationships support education, couples should make agreements:

1. Set specific times for studying and communication

2. Provide mutual positive reinforcement

3. Study together with clear objectives, not merely for chatting
