In today’s highly digital modern era, digital literacy has become one of the most crucial skills for university students. However, some students still overlook the importance of digital literacy in their academic journey and daily lives. This article discusses the negative impacts that may arise when students neglect digital literacy and explains why this skill should be a top priority.

WHAT IS DIGITAL LITERACY?

Digital literacy is the ability to use digital technology and information effectively, critically, and responsibly. It includes the skills to access, evaluate, and utilize digital resources to support learning processes and social interaction.

NEGATIVE IMPACTS WHEN STUDENTS IGNORE DIGITAL LITERACY

1. Difficulty Accessing and Understanding Academic Information
Without digital literacy, students may struggle to find learning materials, academic journals, and other reliable online sources. As a result, the quality of their learning decreases.

2. Ineffectiveness in Participating in Online Learning
Students who lack digital skills often face difficulties attending online classes, completing digital assignments, and engaging in virtual discussions.

3. Vulnerability to Hoaxes and Misinformation
A lack of critical evaluation skills makes students more susceptible to fake news and misinformation circulating on digital platforms.

4. Data Security and Privacy Risks
Without adequate knowledge of digital security, students are more likely to become victims of data theft, online fraud, or account misuse.

5. Limited Career Development Opportunities
The modern workplace demands strong digital competencies. Students who ignore digital literacy may find it difficult to compete and adapt to future professional demands.

WHY DIGITAL LITERACY SHOULD BE A STUDENT PRIORITY

* Improves Learning Quality: Enables easier access to credible learning resources.
* Supports Collaboration and Networking: Facilitates digital communication and teamwork.
* Prepares for Future Careers: Equips students with essential skills for the technology-driven job market.
* Ensures Digital Safety and Ethics: Encourages responsible and secure use of technology.

HOW STUDENTS CAN IMPROVE DIGITAL LITERACY

* Participate in Digital Literacy Training
Take advantage of workshops or online courses to enhance digital skills.

* Use Technology Productively
Regularly utilize learning applications, research software, and digital communication platforms.

* Develop Critical Thinking toward Information
Always verify sources before trusting or sharing information.

* Learn Digital Security and Privacy
Understand how to protect personal data and recognize signs of online scams.

CONCLUSION

Ignoring digital literacy in the modern era not only hinders students’ learning processes but also poses risks to security, ethics, and future career development. Therefore, digital literacy must be a core focus that students continuously develop to survive and succeed in an ever-evolving digital world.
