INTRODUCTION
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in schools is expanding—from automatic attendance systems to behavioral analysis and data-based assessments. While this helps schools understand students’ learning needs, it raises serious concerns about student privacy and freedom.
1. INCREASINGLY DEEP DATA COLLECTION
AI analyzes large amounts of data, including:
- Attendance history
- Digital device activity
- Smart CCTV recordings
- Emotional or body language data
- Exam results and learning behavior
The more data collected, the higher the risk of misuse or data breaches.
2. RISKS TO STUDENTS’ DIGITAL PRIVACY
AI systems often require access to sensitive information, creating risks such as:
- Data being used by third parties
- Cyberattacks leaking personal information
- Digital identities being exposed at a young age
3. POTENTIALLY UNFAIR ASSESSMENTS
Algorithms can be biased if the training data is imbalanced, leading to:
- Students being judged by patterns, not actual abilities
- Labels like “lazy,” “passive,” or “high risk”
- Decisions that are hard to explain (black-box systems)
4. PRESSURE AND LOSS OF FREEDOM
Knowing they are constantly monitored can make students:
- Feel pressure to behave “perfectly”
- Fear making small mistakes
- Lose creativity and spontaneity
5. POTENTIAL MISUSE BY INSTITUTIONS OR THIRD PARTIES
Without strict policies, data may be misused for:
- Institutional interests
- Commercial profiling
- Excessive government oversight
6. POSITIVE POTENTIAL IF USED ETHICALLY
- When used responsibly, AI can:
- Help teachers understand learning needs
- Identify students needing academic or emotional support
- Provide faster assessment
CONCLUSION
AI monitoring systems offer benefits but also pose serious risks to student privacy and freedom. Schools must ensure strict data protection, transparency, fairness, and strong human oversight to prevent harm.
