When opening social media, many people assume that the content they see comes solely from the accounts they follow. In reality, the process is far more complex. Social media feeds are determined by massive algorithmic systems that not only learn what you like, but also predict what will keep you on the platform longer.

A. Algorithms: The Invisible Brain Behind Social Media

Social media algorithms are systems based on artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, designed to study human behavior. They operate based on three main principles:

Collecting User Data

Every action you take is recorded as data, including:

  • scrolling speed,
  • videos watched until completion,
  • posts skipped in less than one second,
  • comments you read even without responding,
  • consistent active hours.

Pattern Recognition

The algorithm then identifies patterns from this data. If for three consecutive days you watch comedy content at night, the system concludes that “comedy content is suitable for you at night.”

Recommendation Production (Prediction Models)

Based on these patterns, the algorithm predicts content most likely to:

  • make you laugh,
  • make you angry (since anger increases comments),
  • spark curiosity,
  • bring you back the next day.

Algorithms do not work to help you—they work to keep you engaged longer.

B. Data Collection Goes Beyond the Surface

Social media platforms do not only track what you click. They may also analyze:

  • facial expressions (on platforms that detect reactions),
  • audio you listen to,
  • typing patterns,
  • time spent reading captions,
  • physical location,
  • device type.

All of this data is used to predict your next behavior.

C. Ranking Systems: How Content Is Prioritized

A single post can be evaluated using hundreds of indicators. For example, Instagram considers:

  • Interest Score – likelihood you are interested,
  • Recency Score – newer content is prioritized,
  • Relationship Score – frequency of interaction with the creator,
  • Engagement Probability – likelihood of liking or saving.

Based on these scores, the algorithm ranks content. This is why top-performing posts appear first.

D. Algorithms Are Constantly Changing

Platforms update their algorithms to:

  • prevent user boredom,
  • combat spam,
  • increase usage duration,
  • promote certain trends.

This is why users often feel their engagement has dropped—algorithms change without notice.
