Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) is often used as the main benchmark for a student’s success during college. Many students feel pressured because the GPA is considered to determine their future. However, there are many facts about GPA that are rarely known and often misunderstood. Understanding these facts can help students adopt a wiser attitude while studying.

GPA IS NOT THE ONLY DETERMINER OF SUCCESS
Many students think that a high GPA is the only path to success. In reality, the working world and professional environments also consider skills, experience, and work attitude. GPA is important, but it is not the only factor that determines the quality of a graduate.

DIFFERENT GRADING SYSTEMS AFFECT GPA
Each university, and even each lecturer, may have different grading systems. The standard for an A grade in one class may not be the same as in another class. This makes GPA not always comparable absolutely between students from different academic backgrounds.

GPA CAN BE IMPROVED OVER TIME
Some students feel hopeless when they receive a low GPA in the early semesters. In fact, GPA is cumulative and can still be improved in the following semesters. With better study strategies and consistency, a GPA that once dropped still has the opportunity to rise significantly.

HEAVY CREDIT COURSES HAVE A STRONG IMPACT
Not all courses have the same impact on GPA. Courses with a large number of credits (SKS) have a stronger influence compared to courses with fewer credits. Therefore, students need to pay extra attention to core courses to maintain their GPA.

HIGH GPA DOES NOT ALWAYS INDICATE DEEP UNDERSTANDING
A high GPA is often associated with academic intelligence, but in reality it does not always reflect deep understanding. Some students can achieve high grades due to exam strategies, but lack practical mastery of the material. This shows that the learning process is still more important than just numbers.

GPA IS USED FOR DIFFERENT PURPOSES
GPA has various functions, ranging from scholarship requirements, internship selection, to graduation. However, not all fields or institutions give the same weight to GPA. Some companies value organizational experience, portfolios, and communication skills more than academic grades alone.

BALANCING ACADEMIC AND NON-ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES IS STILL IMPORTANT
Excessive focus on GPA can make students ignore self-development outside the classroom. In fact, involvement in organizations, committees, and social activities also builds soft skills that are not reflected in GPA, but are greatly needed after graduation.

CONCLUSION
GPA is important, but it is not the only reflection of a student’s quality. Understanding the facts about GPA can help students go through college in a healthier and more realistic way. By balancing academic achievements and personal development, students can prepare a more mature and sustainable future.
