Being a university student often means living in a phase of life filled with questions. One of the most common is about future choices: following one’s own dreams or fulfilling parents’ expectations. This dilemma feels close to the lives of many students because it involves family hopes, personal responsibility, and the search for identity. Not a few students feel pressured because they must choose between two things that are equally important.

A Dilemma Close to Student Life

For some students, college is not only about studying on campus but also about meeting their parents’ expectations. From the beginning, major choices are often directed toward “safe” options with clear career prospects. At the same time, students begin to realize what they truly want. When personal dreams do not align with family expectations, inner conflict becomes difficult to avoid.

Why Parents Want Their Children to Comply

Parents usually act based on experience and concern. They want their children to have stable lives and avoid the risk of failure. Therefore, the advice or direction they give is often rooted in protective intentions. However, generational differences make perspectives on opportunities and success not always the same.

When Personal Dreams Are Set Aside

Following parents’ choices without considering personal interests can affect students’ mental well-being. Feelings of pressure, boredom, and loss of motivation often arise when a chosen major does not match one’s passion. If left unresolved, this condition can affect academic performance and create uncertainty about the future.

Pursuing Dreams with Careful Consideration

Following a dream does not mean ignoring logic. Dreams need to be accompanied by clear plans, an understanding of opportunities, and readiness to face challenges. Many fields are currently growing rapidly and opening new career paths for young people. With proper preparation, dreams can become a realistic and meaningful life direction.

The Role of Communication in Making Choices

Honest and open communication can help ease conflict between students and parents. Explaining reasons, goals, and future plans calmly can help parents better understand their child’s perspective. Seeking a middle ground can also be a solution so that both sides feel heard and respected.

Learning to Take Responsibility for Choices

Every life choice comes with consequences. Whether following personal dreams or complying with parents’ wishes, students must be ready to take responsibility for the decisions they make. This process is an important part of personal growth. College is not only about earning a degree, but also about shaping character and life direction.

Conclusion

The dilemma between following one’s own dreams or obeying parents’ expectations is a common experience among students. The pressure arises from differing perspectives between personal desires and family hopes. Through good communication, careful planning, and self-awareness, students can find choices that are not only realistic but also allow them to grow and feel fulfilled.
