Seeing others achieve success often brings mixed feelings. On one hand, we may feel happy for them or inspired by their achievements. On the other hand, it is not uncommon to feel internal pressure, as if we are falling behind or have not achieved enough. This phenomenon has become even more noticeable in the era of social media, where other people’s accomplishments constantly appear before our eyes.

UNCONSCIOUS SOCIAL COMPARISON

Without realizing it, we often compare ourselves to others. This social comparison is actually natural, but it becomes problematic when done excessively. When witnessing others’ success, we tend to measure ourselves against the same standards without considering the different circumstances and journeys involved.

As a result, other people’s success feels like a mirror that reflects our own “shortcomings.”

SOCIAL MEDIA AMPLIFIES THE PRESSURE

Social media usually showcases polished end results. Stories about failures, long processes, or self-doubt before success are rarely shared. Consequently, other people’s success appears easy and fast, making us feel left behind and pressured to achieve the same outcomes immediately.

ENVIRONMENTAL STANDARDS OF SUCCESS

Our surroundings also play a role in shaping this pressure. There is often an assumption that success must be achieved at a certain age or in a particular way. When others meet these standards, we feel compelled to pursue the same path, even though our life goals may be different.

THE IMPACT OF PRESSURE ON MENTAL HEALTH

The pressure that comes from comparing ourselves to others’ success can negatively affect mental health. Feelings of dissatisfaction, anxiety, and loss of motivation may arise if these emotions are left unchecked. In the long run, such pressure can hinder personal growth and overall happiness.

TURNING PRESSURE INTO POSITIVE MOTIVATION

Other people’s success does not have to be a source of pressure. By shifting our perspective, their achievements can become a source of inspiration. Start by setting goals that align with your own values and circumstances. Focus on the process rather than just the outcome, and appreciate every small progress you have made.

CONCLUSION

Other people’s success often feels like pressure because we compare ourselves too frequently without seeing the full context. Social media and environmental standards intensify this feeling. By understanding that everyone has their own unique path, we can release unnecessary pressure and refocus on our own personal growth.
