In today’s fast-paced digital era, Generation Z is the closest group to technology and social media. They grew up with the internet, live with constant notifications, and are used to seeing others’ lives in real time. This environment strengthens the influence of *Fear of Missing Out* (FOMO) on their thoughts, behaviors, and decisions.

WHAT IS FOMO AND WHY DOES IT HAPPEN?

FOMO is the fear of missing out on important or enjoyable experiences. It arises when someone feels others are enjoying something more appealing or meaningful than they are.

Among Generation Z, FOMO appears due to:

  • High intensity of social media use
  • The habit of comparing themselves with others
  • Pressure to stay updated with trends
  • The desire for digital recognition

These factors make FOMO easy to develop and hard to avoid.

THE ROLE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN SHAPING FOMO

Social media is full of fast information and attractive visuals. Features like stories, short videos, and real-time updates push users to constantly see what others are doing.

Gen Z—who are expressive and open—often see achievements, trips, successes, and lifestyles of their peers online. This visibility creates fear of falling behind, pushing them to replicate similar experiences.

Algorithms also intensify this by showing emotionally triggering content, including jealousy or curiosity.

THE IMPACT OF FOMO ON THE LIVES OF GENERATION Z

FOMO affects emotions, social behavior, and productivity:

1. Anxiety and Psychological Pressure

They may feel inadequate when others appear more active or successful.

2. Impulsive Decision-Making

FOMO pushes people to follow trends without careful thought, like buying viral products.

3. Reduced Focus and Productivity

A desire to stay connected disrupts concentration.

4. Dependence on Social Validation

Likes, comments, and views become measures of self-worth.

HOW GEN Z CAN OVERCOME FOMO

Some methods include:

  • Limiting social media usage
  • Setting personal priorities
  • Focusing on self-growth instead of comparison
  • Engaging only in activities that bring real value
  • Practicing self-awareness when FOMO arises

CONCLUSION

FOMO strongly affects Generation Z because they live in a digital environment full of comparisons. Social media, trends, and the desire for recognition intensify the emotional impact. However, with awareness and self-regulation, FOMO can be managed without harming mental well-being or productivity.
