Entering Public Universities (PTN): Opportunities for Vocational High School Students

Entering a public university (PTN) is often considered a path more suitable for general high school (SMA) students. However, in reality, vocational high school (SMK) students have equally strong opportunities to be accepted—and in some cases, even greater—thanks to the vocational skills they possess. The main key lies in having the right strategy from an early stage.

UNDERSTAND PTN ADMISSION PATHWAYS FOR SMK STUDENTS

Before starting the application process, it is important to understand the available admission pathways. SMK students can apply through three main routes:

* SNBP (Achievement-Based Selection): Assesses academic records, achievements, and portfolios.
* SNBT (Computer-Based Test): Evaluates literacy, reasoning, mathematics, and general knowledge skills.
* Independent Selection: Each public university sets its own rules, which may include portfolio assessments or additional tests.

Understanding the characteristics of each pathway helps students choose the option that best suits their abilities.

PRIORITIZE MAJOR RELEVANCE

The relevance between the student’s vocational major and the chosen university program is a crucial factor. The more aligned the fields are, the higher the chances of acceptance.
Examples of relevance include:

* IT Vocational School → Informatics Engineering / Information Systems
* Accounting Vocational School → Accounting / Management
* Mechanical Engineering Vocational School → Mechanical Engineering / Industrial Engineering
* Pharmacy/Health Vocational School → Pharmacy / Nursing / Nutrition

Such alignment demonstrates student readiness and foundational competence.

BUILD A STRONG PORTFOLIO

One of the main strengths of SMK students is their practical skills. Evidence such as projects, internship reports, work samples, or competency certificates can be a significant advantage, especially for achievement-based or independent admission routes.
A well-organized and structured portfolio that reflects real expertise will highlight the student’s quality in the eyes of universities.

IMPROVE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AND PREPARATION

Although SMK students focus more on practical skills, academic ability remains important—especially for the SNBT pathway. Steps that can help include:

* Practicing test questions regularly
* Joining additional learning programs
* Strengthening basic mathematics and literacy skills
* Learning from educational videos or online platforms

Better preparation directly increases the chances of passing selection tests.

ACTIVELY SEEK OPPORTUNITIES

Many students fail not because they lack ability, but because they do not try. Applying through multiple pathways, preparing documents early, and actively seeking official information from public universities can make a significant difference.

CONCLUSION

SMK students have strong opportunities to be admitted to public universities if they apply the right strategies. Major relevance, a strong portfolio, solid academic preparation, and the courage to try are the main keys. With consistent effort, the doors to public universities are wide open for SMK students.
