Starting college is often seen as a major life step that should come with strong confidence in one’s chosen major. In reality, not all students begin college with a clear sense of passion. Many feel uncertain, confused, or simply go with the flow. This condition is neither strange nor wrong. In fact, starting college without passion is a normal beginning for many students in Indonesia.

This article discusses why this situation is normal, what causes it, and how students can find direction and meaning during their college years.

THE PHENOMENON OF STUDYING WITHOUT PASSION

Many students choose their major due to parental influence, job trends, peer pressure, or limited options. In late adolescence, it is natural for individuals to still be discovering themselves. Interests, talents, and life goals often develop through experience.

Social pressure also plays a big role. Many students feel they must immediately enter college after high school without enough time to explore what they truly enjoy. As a result, their choice of major tends to be practical rather than personal.

WHY NOT HAVING PASSION IS NORMAL

Passion does not always appear instantly. In many cases, passion grows through process rather than from an initial decision. Interest can develop after someone gains deeper understanding of a field, experiences its challenges, and sees its real impact.

Additionally, passion is often misunderstood as a strong feeling of interest from the beginning. In reality, passion can also grow from consistency, responsibility, and small achievements over time. Therefore, not having passion at the start of college is not a sign of failure, but part of the journey of self-discovery.

PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACTS COMMONLY EXPERIENCED BY STUDENTS

Students who feel they chose the wrong major or lack passion often experience anxiety, low motivation, and comparison with peers. If not handled properly, this can lower self-confidence and enthusiasm for learning.

However, it is important to understand that these feelings are temporary. Many successful individuals admit they felt uncertain at the beginning of college. The difference lies in how they responded to the doubt, not in the doubt itself.

HOW TO FIND DIRECTION WHILE STUDYING WITHOUT PASSION

Instead of focusing on uncertainty, students can use their college years as a space for exploration. Here are several steps that can help:

1. Get to Know Yourself

Use your time in college to understand your strengths and weaknesses. Notice which subjects feel more interesting, which activities make you feel energized, and what kind of environment helps you grow.

2. Be Active in Non-Academic Activities

Organizations, committees, communities, and volunteer activities often open new perspectives. Many students discover their passion outside the classroom.

3. Focus on Skills, Not Just Your Major

Today’s job market values skills more than the title of a major. Communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and time management can be developed in any field of study.

4. Build a Growth Mindset

Viewing college as a learning process rather than a final life determinant reduces pressure. With a growth mindset, every experience—good or bad—becomes valuable preparation.

PASSION CAN BE BUILT, NOT JUST WAITED FOR

Many people wait for passion to appear before taking action. In reality, action often creates passion. When someone becomes seriously involved, sees the results of their efforts, and feels the benefits, interest and care grow naturally.

In the context of college, going through the process with responsibility and openness can reveal opportunities that were never imagined before. A major that once felt ordinary can become a gateway to a meaningful career and contribution.

CONCLUSION

Starting college without passion is not a mistake, let alone something to be ashamed of. It is a normal condition experienced by many students. What matters most is not how certain we are at the beginning, but how we go through the process, learn about ourselves, and continue to grow.

College is not about finding instant answers, but about the journey of building a future. With an open attitude and willingness to learn, passion can be found—or even created—along the way.
